We did three-part breathing in class today…I always think if I get it just right, my collar bones will un-stick from my sternum and fly away.

The xoJane Real Girl Belly Project
Last month, xoJane writer Emily asked readers to submit unedited photos of their bellies, and the resulting photo galleries are incredible. Here’s what one reader said about her belly:
I’m more of a recent belly-lover, but I’m so frickin’ glad I’ve joined the club. 5 reasons why I’m a fan of my abdomen:
1. It has stretch marks! More specifically on my hips and around my belly button, but they’re there, and they’re there to stay. I used to be real self conscious of them, but they tell the story of pubescent weight gain, anorexia-induced weight loss, and the state of full-fledged confidence and recovery. AWESOME!
2. It has scars! I’ve had a mole removed and a laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. Nothing too big or “impressive,” but still worth a story or two!
3. It stores nutritious and delicious food! Such as beef stew, tiramisu, and pineapple yogurt! ‘Nuff said.
4. It’s slightly hairy and quite soft! WOOHOO!
5. It allows me to walk, talk, run, laugh, and live. Basically a win situation!
-Natalie, 20
In short: BELLIES ARE THE BEST. Yes, sure, bellies allow us to do ab work and hold intense poses—but come on. Bellies make child’s pose so much fun! I love letting my belly rest between my legs. And bellies have bellybuttons, which are handy for collecting lint or piercing. And where else would I store my food baby??

Broga: Yoga for Dudes
Guys. GUYS.
This is a real thing.
from Broga: Yoga for Men
Broga is a yoga class geared for men (where it’s okay if you can’t touch your toes).
Strong, energetic, and challenging, Broga combines the best core-strengthening, muscle-toning, cardio-working, stress-reducing, clarity-enhancing yoga postures with functional fitness exercises for an amazing workout.
You’ll get that pumped-up feeling you get from working out and a deep flexibility and relaxation feeling from “working in.”
If you’ve already been to a class, we’ll see you again soon. If not, your first class is on us, but you’ll be thanking yourself for making the effort to show up. Good music, cool vibe, all are welcome.
Hm, okay, I see what they’re trying to do here: re-brand yoga as an activity/lifestyle/exercise choice that’s “cool” for men to do too. That’s fine, and especially if this sort of environment encourages men to try other non-bro-centric yoga classes. Except making this gender divide even more visible works against some great lessons that men (and women) can learn in more co-ed classes. I think yoga is humbling and the teachings of yoga (not just Broga) show you that yes it is okay if you can’t touch your toes. It’s also okay if your neighbor can touch his/her toes. All of our bodies are different, and that’s something that should be celebrated, not hidden.
It’s probably different for us since we’re in university setting and Ithaca is very yoga-friendly, but there are a lot of guys, of all ages, in our yoga classes. I think that’s great, not only because A) it’s sexy but also B) I think we have a lot to learn from each other. I like seeing guys who are new at yoga hit balance poses that I’ve struggled with, or push up from chaturanga like it’s nothing; I like seeing people older than me bending in ways that I can’t. It encourages me to grow and find new ways of honoring my body, and I appreciate sharing my practice with all sorts of different people.
