Fear is a tool in our brain’s toolbox
flowyogamexico: Design by: Gregory Ryan Klein http://cargocollective.com/gregoryryanklein and it’s the biggest “tool” of all! :P I just recently started following Flow Yoga Mexico: their designs are beautiful and paired with equally meaningful words. This one makes a lot of sense to me. Sometimes I feel like I am manipulated by my fear: fear of failure, fear of hurting...

“Less effort; more surrender.”
– One of my teachers this morning. I always hear exactly what I need to hear at yoga classes. Usually I don’t know I need to hear it until I do. (via frenchteeth)

99% Practice, 1% Theory: The Traditional Ashtanga... →
fuckyeahashtangayoga: The format of the practice always remains the same; one always begins practice with Surya Namaskar, concludes with Padmasana and rest, and the various asanas gradually fill the space between these two poles. Learning yoga in this traditional manner benefits the student on many levels. It is… I loved the Ashtanga classes we attended earlier in the semester and wish...

Who does yoga?
Have you ever taken a look around the room to see who practices yoga and wondered what sociocultural values it reflects? I see white women of all ages, young Asian and Asian American women, white European men of all ages, white American men above the age of 45, and gay white men of all ages. Occasionally there are people who fall outside of these identities, but they are rare.  Why is it that if...

Post Passion Pit
Awake for 22 hrs yesterday with Kendra and CCC to set up the Passion Pit concert! too much vertical, not enough horizontal. I woke up this morning to pre-daylight savings alarm, got angry, put my legs up the wall on my bed (oh we were craving this inversion last night) and promptly fell back asleep :) guess who’s not going to the gym tomorrow. —yan

Have you ever missed something so much that you...
I’ve been doing yoga in my dreams quite regularly this past month as I was rehabilitating in real life from a shoulder injury. Dream yoga, however, never felt as good as the real thing—something I was reminded of yesterday as I enjoyed my first class in too long. Dreams can be so vivid, but they always lack something concrete and real about them. (Sorry Descartes, I know this...

doing yoga while stressed out
Is a really strange experience. I went to sleep last night CRAVING today’s class, looking forward to the different kind of exercise yoga provides me in contrast to going to the gym and doing cardio. Then, my professor let us out late for class, cutting my commute time to yoga from 10 minutes to 6.5. Not good. Then I get to class and realize I have to pee. Then I look to my left and the guy...
